| In some instances, it is necessary to mitigate for the
loss of habitat in management plans and developers proposals. Mitigation
plans for protected species such as great crested newt, badger and bat
can all be tailored to suit individual site requirements under special
licences issued by Department of Environment, Transport and Regions.
Services offered include site survey, population estimations, mitigation
proposals and implementation of mitigation plans
Mitigation
for great crested newt can include the trapping of all amphibian species
in an area and placing them into ‘receptor’ sites where they
will be unhindered by any development work. Such development work will
normally need to include provision for the conservation if the required
licence is to be issued by the Department of Environment, Transport and
Regions. Additional ponds may need to be created and land set aside to
be managed as suitable terrestrial habitat.
Surveys for great crested newt (and other protected species) are carried
out under the necessary licences issued by English Nature. Survey techniques
employed vary depending upon species and habitats.
Habitat creation and restoration plans can also be prepared together
with recommendations for after care and management
